The outcome of two forces—systole and diastole—hypertension is the sustained elevation of blood pressure on the blood vessel wall. Systolic pressure: The force exerted on the arteries while the heart pumps blood through them. Diastolic pressure is the pressure produced while the heart is at rest in between beats. When measuring blood pressure, these two forces are represented. Blood pressure is always pushed on the blood vessel walls, but high blood pressure (hypertension) is only referred to as such when it is consistently elevated. Initially, the heart's pumping of blood causes the blood pressure to be exerted in the arteries. It is well recognized that the leading cause of worldwide preventable deaths is hypertension. Prior to the careful epidemiological redistribution, hypertension was thought to be a disease of the wealthy and affluent, but it is now a health issue for both the wealthy and the poor. A chronic medical disease called hypertension, sometimes referred to as high blood pressure (HBP), is characterized by a consistently high blood pressure in the arteries. Usually, high blood pressure does not result in any symptoms.
